He has won over 6.2 million in prize money and is believed to have a current net worth of around $5 million.
Early Life
As a junior, Tommy Paul was a highly ranked tennis player, reaching a career-high ITF junior rank of No. 3 in December 2015.
During that year, he played in two junior Grand Slam finals. He won the French Open boys’ singles title by defeating his fellow American Taylor Fritz in the final in three sets.
At the same tournament, he also reached the doubles final partnering with fellow American William Blumberg. Moreover, he reached the final in the US Open boys’ singles later that year, but lost to Fritz in three sets.
Early Career and Breaking into the Top 100
Paul turned professional in 2015 and has since shown a preference for playing on clay. He won the Junior French Open and his first five singles titles on the ITF Futures circuit on clay. In 2015, he was successful in qualifying for the first time for the main stages of a major at the US Open, but was defeated at the first hurdle by Andreas Seppi.
In March 2016, Paul qualified for the Miami Masters, which helped him crack into the top 200. In April of the same year, he was given a wildcard entry into the 2016 U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships at Houston, where he defeated Paolo Lorenzi in the first round, securing his first ATP level win.
For the rest of 2016, Paul mainly competed on the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Circuit. He continued to do so in the first half of 2017. However, in July 2017, he went through the qualifying rounds at the Atlanta Open and defeated seventh seed Chung Hyeon in three sets. He then defeated Malek Jaziri in
three sets to advance to his first ATP Tour-level quarterfinal, where he lost to Gilles Müller., who was the third seed.
Following his performance at the Atlanta tournament, Tommy was given entry to the Washington Open as a wildcard. There, he beat Casper Ruud to progress to the second round and then achieved the biggest win of his career by defeating Lucas Pouille in straight sets. In the next round, he faced Gilles Müller again, but this time came out on top in three sets to reach his first quarterfinal in Washington. However, he lost to Kei Nishikori in three sets.
In September of the same year, Paul won his second ATP Challenger title of the year in New Haven, which helped him break into the top 100 for the first time in his career. He had previously won a Challenger title in Sarasota earlier in the season.
Pro Career
The 6 foot 1″ American has been a pro since 2015. Currently his career win percentage is 55.4%, having won 133 of his 240 matches. He has still only won one title, however in grand slam events he has reach the Australian Open semi-final in 2023 and the fourth round of Wimbledon and the US Open in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Interestingly, considering he is said to favour clay, he has struggled in the French Open, only making it as far as the second round on three occasions before crashing out. In the 2021 Olympics, he also lost in the first round.
As a doubles player his record is even more modest. He is yet to win a professional titled and has only triumphed in 42.5% of his matches (31 wins). He has reached the quarter finals of the French Open and Davis Cup as a doubles player. But has not made it passed the second round of any of the other majors.
Personal Life
Paul has been dating the social media influencer Paige Lorenze for over a year.
Tommy is the son of Jill MacMillan, who used to play tennis in her college days at East Carolina University. His current tennis coach is Brad Stine, with whom he has been working together with since 2020.
Although he was born in New Jersey, Paul grew up in North Carolina. His mum and stepdad now live on a farm in South Jersey. Whenever he visits he helps out of the farm.
