Taylor Harry Fritz is a professional tennis player from the United States who is becoming a rising star in the game. He has achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 5 by the ATP, which he achieved in February 2023.
To date, Fritz has collected six titles on the ATP singles tour, and one of which was the Masters 1000, which he earned at the Indian Wells Masters in 2022. His most notable performances in the major tournaments include quarter final appearances at Wimbledon Championships and the US Open. At present, he is the No. 1 American in men’s singles.
Fritz made it to his first ATP final in just his third career event, the 2016 Memphis Open, and this feat is matched by only one other American player, John Isner. He also won a junior major singles title at the 2015 US Open, and was a junior singles runner-up at the 2015 French Open.
Early Life
Fritz is the youngest child of Kathy May, a former professional tennis player who reached the top 10 in the rankings. His father, Guy, also played the sport professionally and was awarded the title of US Olympic Development Coach of the Year in 2016. Taylor is also the great-great-grandson of David May, who founded The May Department Stores Company, which eventually merged with the world famous Macy’s.
From one of his mother’s previous relationships, he has two half-brothers – Christopher and Kyle both of whom are older. Fritz’s uncle, Harry also played tennis on a professional level and is in the history books for participating in the seventh-longest match in history by number of games.
Along with his brothers, Fritz grew up in Rancho Santa Fe, a suburb within the metropolitan San Diego area. He went to the Torrey Pines High School and as a freshman, took out the San Diego section of the CIF singles title. However, he change to an online high school which enabled him to participate in ITF junior events all year round, just a few months after beginning his sophomore year.
Junior Career
Fritz didn’t participate in any ITF events until he turned 15 years old. His first tournament was a low-level Grade-4 one in March 2013, in Claremont, not far from where he was raised. He didn’t participate in another tournament until the Junior US Open later that year. After that, just before turning 16 years of age, he began competing regularly on the ITF Circuit. The following year, he
reached the semis at Junior Wimbledon. He then won his first Grade A tournament at the 2014 Osaka Mayor’s Cup.
In 2015, Fritz performed remarkably well, reaching at least the quarterfinal of all four junior Grand Slam tournaments. He made it to the finals of the French Open, where he lost to Tommy Paul, and the US Open, where he defeated Paul. This outstanding performance helped him to end the calendar year as the number-one-ranked junior boy’s player. He was crowned the ITF Junior World Champion in 2015, which made him the first American, since Donald Young in 2005 to hold this title.
Turning Professional and Early Career
Fritz debuted in his first tournament on the ATP Tour at Nottingham, after being granted a wild card. He emerged victorious by defeating Pablo Carreño Busta in his first ATP match.
In September 2015, Fritz became a professional tennis player after winning the Junior US Open. He swiftly climbed up the ATP rankings, going from the 600th to the top 250th spot. Fritz also became the ninth player at the age of 17 to win more than one title on the Challenger Tour – a feat he did consecutively.
This feat has also been accomplished by others players like Tomáš Berdych, Juan Martín del Potro Richard Gasquet and Bernard Tomic, as well as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Pro Career To Date
At the time of writing, Fritz has won 235 games and lost 168 at professional levels in singles matches. This gives him a career record of 58.3% in the main draw matches of grand slams, ATP Tour games and the Davis Cup.
Overall, he has won six career titles and accumulated about $13.5 million in prize money. In Grand Slam events he has reached the quarter finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, but has not progressed past the third and fourth rounds respectively in the French or Australian Opens. He did however reach the semis of the Tour Finals in 2022.
In doubles tournaments, his record is even more modest. He is yet to win a career titled and has a win percentage of only 43.5%. This translates to only 37 wins in 85 matches. As a doubles player he has not even broken into the top 100 rankings yet.
