Hubert Hurkacz is a professional tennis player from Poland for whom big things are expected. Since turning pro in 2015, he has established himself as a force to be reckoned with, achieving a highest ranking of number nine in the ATP rankings back in November 2021.

To date he has won seven ATP Tour singles titles including a couple of Masters 1000 titles at the Miami Open in 2021 and the Shanghai Masters in 2023. Not only is he the first Pole to take out an ATP Masters 1000 title, he is also the highest ranked male Polish tennis player in history. In doubles, he has also been ranked as high as number 30 in the world.

Hurkacz is known for being an all-court player. Standing at 6 ft 5 inches tall, he is known for his powerful serve, which regularly tops 150 mph. He also has an excellent ability to follow up his serve with effective one-two punches. That said, Hurkacz is not just a defensive baseliner, but also often incorporates netplay into his style and has been recognised for his inclination towards playing serve-and-volley to close points. Still only 26 years old, he has acquired a tidy net worth of around US $5 million to date.

Early Life

Hurkacz was born in Wrocław, Poland, as the first of two children to his parents Zofia and Krzysztof. His younger sister, Nika, is ten years younger than him.

Tennis ran in Hurkacz’s family, with his mother having been a junior champion in Poland and his uncle, Tomasz Maliszewski, having played tennis professionally. Continuing the sporty theme, his grandfather also played volleyball at an international level.

Hurkacz first picked up a tennis racket at the age of five, after his mother introduced him to the sport. Initially, his parents were his coaches, but he later began taking classes and playing more frequently. Hurkacz became interested in pursuing professional tennis after watching Roger Federer on TV. He has said that if he hadn’t pursued tennis, he would have explored either basketball or motor racing, or continued his education.

However, tennis it was, and as a player, by 2014, Hurkacz had well established himself as one of the most promising young tennis players in Poland, alongside Jan Zieliński and Kamil Majchrzak.

Junior Career

During his junior tennis career, Hurkacz was placed as high as number 29 in the worldwide rankings. Along with Alex Molčan, his partner, they finished runners-up at the boys’ doubles Australian Open final in 2015.

In 2018, Hurkacz rose into the top 100 for the first time after reaching the second rounds of both the French Open and the US Open. He also secured a berth that year at the ATP Next Generation Finals and duly beat Jaume Munar, though he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Frances Tiafoe.

The following year, he won his first ATP title at the Winston-Salem Open, while in 2020 he beat three higher-ranked opponents at the ATP Cup en route to reaching the semifinals of the ATP Auckland Open – which allowed him to enter the top 30 of the world rankings. In 2021, he won his second and third singles titles and went on to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal at the Wimbledon Championships.

In doing so, he became the second Polish man to reach a semi-finals appearance at a Grand Slam after Jerzy Janowicz in 2013.

Pro Career To Date

To date, Hubert has earned over $14 million in prize money, the majority of which have come in singles tournaments.

As of January 2024, his current win percentage is 58.5% for all main draw matches in Grand Slam, ATP Tour and Davis Cup competitions. He has won 176 out of his 301 professional matches, in the process snaring seven career titles and attaining a highest ATP ranking of number nine.

Despite this, he has only reached the semi-final of one Grand Slam – at Wimbledon in 2021. He has reached the 4th round of the Australian Open twice and French Open once. He has crashed out of the US Open at the second round stage on five different occasions.

As a doubles player his record is quite modest. He only has a 47.3% win percentage, triumphing in only 53 of 112 matches. But he has taken out four career titles in this format of the game.

Endorsements

The Japanese sports company, Yonex, is Hurkacz’s main sponsor, providing him with a head-to-toe deal. He is also sponsored by the Polish capital group, Lotos, who invest in oil – he wears their logo on his shirts during matches.

In 2022, during his matches, Hurkacz started to wear the Gerald Charles GC sport watch collection.

Hurkacz also has a partnership with the U.K. based automotive company, McLaren, who allow him to drive their vehicles while at tournaments. Notably, he toured around in the McLaren GT in New York City, while at Indian Wells, during the 2021 BNP Paribas Open, he was spotted driving a McLaren 720S – the same make he runs around in at home in Poland. This partnership came about due to Hurkacz’s love of sports cars since childhood.

Personal Life

Hurkacz is a vegan, which is ironic because apparently when he was younger, he didn’t eat much in the way of vegetables or salads.
