Medvedev was born in Moscow to parents Sergey and Olga. His father was a computer engineer who ran his own business selling business materials. He also has two older sisters, who are 12 and 8 years apart in age from him.

Daniil’s introduction to the sport of tennis came when he was just six years old. His mum saw an advert for group lessons at the swimming pool where he was taking lessons and, along with his dad, encouraged him to enrol. His first teacher there was Ekaterina Kryuchkova, who had previously coached a couple of prominent Russian players. When he was not playing tennis, he regularly played guitar and the harpsichord.
