Daniil Medvedev is a Russian tennis player who on his day can beat anyone in the world. Currently sitting at number 3 in the ATP rankings, he previously held the number one ranking for 16 weeks back in early 2022.
Still only 27, Medvedev has won an impressive 20 singles titles on the ATP Tour. Most notable of these was his win at the ATP Finals in 2020, where he became the only player to beat the world’s top three ranked players en route to the title. He also defeated Novak Djokovic to win the US Open in 2021. In addition, he has triumphed in six different Masters titles at different venues – making him the sixth player in the men’s game to do this.
Now in the tenth year of his professional career, Medvedev has won over $38 million in prize money at the time of writing, though his net worth is estimated to be around $20 currently.
Early Life
Medvedev was born in Moscow to parents Sergey and Olga. His father was a computer engineer who ran his own business selling business materials. He also has two older sisters, who are 12 and 8 years apart in age from him.
Daniil’s introduction to the sport of tennis came when he was just six years old. His mum saw an advert for group lessons at the swimming pool where he was taking lessons and, along with his dad, encouraged him to enrol. His first teacher there was Ekaterina Kryuchkova, who had previously coached a couple of prominent Russian players. When he was not playing tennis, he regularly played guitar and the harpsichord.
Medvedev attended a specialised school where he studied maths and physics. After an early graduation, he enrolled in a commerce and economics course at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. However, he soon dropped out in order to concentrate on tennis. Not long after, he moved to the French coastal city of Antibes, where he joined a tennis academy.
Junior Career
In 2009, Medvedev played his first game at junior level when he was just 13. Just over a year later in December 2010 he won his first tournament.
This proved to be the catalyst for further success as he proceeded to win six titles in a ten month period, including four competitions in a row.
As a junior, Medvedev reached the number 13 ranking. He finished his career with a 109-43 win loss record.
Early Pro Career and First ATP Title
Medvedev turned professional in 2014 and played his first ATP singles main draw match as a qualifier at the Nice Open in 2016, losing in three sets to the Argentine Guido Pella. Just three weeks later, he won his maiden ATP Tour title, taking out the Ricoh Open in a straight sets win over Horacio Zeballos.
At the beginning of 2017, Daniil took part in his first ATP singles final at the Chennai Open, though he lost in straight (two sets) to Roberto Bautista Agut.
Later that year at Wimbledon, he won his first grand slam match, triumphing over Stan Wawrinka, the then number three seed in the world, in four sets – though he went on to lose his second-round match.
First Grand Slam
As he gained more experience on the pro circuit, his performances and consistency level improved, resulting in him going deeper in tournaments. He won the ATP Tour Final in 2020 and went on to reach the final of the Australian Open in 2021, where he lost in straight sets to Novak Djokovic.
A few months later, he redeemed this loss by beating the same opponent in the US Open, marking his first victory in a Grand Slam event.
Current Pro Record
At the time of writing, Medvedev held an impressive 71.1% win-percentage record, enjoying a career record of 334 victories and 136 losses in ATP, Davis Cup, and Grand Slam matches within the main draw.
He is currently ranked as the number three seed in the world and has been as high as number one back on 28 February 2022. Overall, he has won 20 career titles at singles level.
Unfortunately, his doubles career has not been as successful. In partnerships with Aslan Karatsev and Roman Safiullin (the latter predominantly in the Davis Cup), his career record is only 16 wins and 23 defeats in main draw grand slam events – a win percentage of 41%. He has not won any titles at the doubles level and has had a highest ranking of only 170.

Off-court, Medvedev has secured himself a number of endorsement deals. This includes Tecnifibre, predominantly for racquets, Lacoste for shoes and apparel and Bovet for watches.
In addition, he has been an ambassador for HyperX, Lotto, Tinkoff Bank and BMW and currently promotes the Guojiao 1573 brand.
Personal Life
In 2018, Medvedev married Daria Chernyshkova, a junior tennis player who attended Moscow State University. They now have a daughter together. Marriage was clearly agreeable to Medvedev, as he cites it as one of the reasons why his career took off.
As a result of living in France for several years, Daniil can speak English, French and Russian fluently. He is a keen fan of the German football team, FC Bayern Munich.
