Casper Ruud is one of the rising stars of modern tennis. Hailing from Norway, the 26-year-old has been ranked as high as number two in the world (in September 2022), making him Norway’s highest-ranked player of all time.
In a pro career that started in 2015, Ruud has lifted the trophy in ten singles ATP Tour titles and has been a runner-up in three majors. He also spent consecutive weeks inside the ATP top 10 from September 2021 to November 2023.
As a junior, he was ranked world number one in singles, while in doubles, he achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 133, thanks largely to reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2021, with André Göransson as his partner.
Prior to the start of the Australian Open in 2024, he was ranked 11th in the world by the ATP. He is renowned for his professional on-court demeanor and was awarded the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award in 2022. He also has acquired a sizeable network worth thanks to prize money he has won and other endorsements.
Early Life
Ruud is the son of Christian (who himself was former tennis professional) and Lele, his mum. He also has two sisters, Charlotte and Caroline. Together they were raised within Bærum’s Snarøya district.
Casper is a big fan of golf which he enjoys with his dad. He counts Rafael Nadal as his main idol in tennis.
Junior Career
Ruud competed in several Junior Grand Slam tournaments in 2015, where he achieved his best singles performances. He reached the third round of the boy’s singles French Open event, but feel short to Corentin Denolly. He also made it through to the third round of the US Open boys’ singles and the second round of the Wimbledon boys’ singles.
In 2015 during the Wimbledon Boys’ Doubles tournament, Ruud and his partner, Miomir Kecmanović, made it to the semifinals but lost to eventual champions Sumit Nagal and Lý Hoàng Nam. However, they were eliminated in the first round of the 2015 US Open Boys’ Doubles. In 2016, Kecmanović and Ruud reached the semi-finals of the Boys’ French Open Doubles before losing to
Jurabek Karimov and Youssef Hossam.
Junior Number One Ranking and Turning Pro
Ruud began the year as the world’s top-ranked Junior player on 4 January, making him the first Norwegian to achieve the feat. His goal for the 2016 season was to play in Futures tournaments and climb the ATP rankings. In February, he competed in his maiden Futures event final, in which he defeated Carlos Taberner in an exciting match in Paguera, Spain.
He went on to play in another four finals, but only triumphed in one, against the Danish player, Mikael Torpegaard in Kaarina, Finland in a tournament that too place in August. In September, he participated in his first ATP Challenger tournament and won the Copa Sevilla by defeating Taro Daniel in the final. Ruud achieved the feat of being the fourth-youngest player to win a Challenger tournament on his debut. During the tournament, he won his first matches against players ranked in the top 150. He defeated top seed Iñigo Cervantes in the quarterfinals, who was ranked No. 75 in the ATP rankings at the time.
As a result of his win in the Challenger debut, Casper was awarded a wildcard in the Chengdu Open in 2016, his first World 250 series ATP Tour tournament. However, he lost to Viktor Troicki in the first round. Ruud made it through to the ITF Junior Masters event, where he got through to the final but lost out to Hong Seong-chan.
Ruud ended 2016 with an ATP career-high ranking of number 225.
Pro Career To Date
Since turning professional in 2015, Rudd has enjoyed a 64.6% win percentage in main draw matches of Grand Slams, Davis Cup and ATP Tour games. Presently, he has won 212 matches and lost 116. In the process he has accumulated ten titles and achieved a highest ranking of number two on the ATP Tour. His current ranking is number 11.
In Grand Slam events he competed in three finals, including twice at the French Open and once at the US Open. He also made the Tours Finals in 2022. In the Australian Open he got as far as the fourth round in 2021, but at Wimbledon he has only reached the second round twice.
In doubles, his record is more modest, winning only 39.6% of the matches in which he has played. He has yet to win a career title and has only achieved a highest ranking of 133 – in July 2021. However, he did get as far as the quarter finals of Wimbledon in 2021.

Ruud has appeared in Rafa Nadal Academy, a tennis docuseries that first ran in September 2021 on Amazon Prime. He also featured on the Netflix show Break Point, which aired in January 2023.
Some people say he is a dead ringer for the singer Niall Horan, who famously was a member of the boy band, One Direction.
Since 2018, Ruud has been in a relationship with Maria Galligani, who is also Norweigan.
