Alex de Minaur is an professional tennis player from Australian, who is currently the leading male player in terms of rankings. Despite turning professional in 2015, he is still only 24 and is yet to fulfill his undoubted potential.
To date he has won seven titles in the ATP Tour as a singles player and one in doubles. He currently sits at number ten in the rankings, though he is yet to make his mark in a Grand Slam event. That said, there is no question that his performances are getting better. So, it might just be a matter of time before he scores his maiden title in a major.
Early Life
Alex De Minaur, popularly known as ‘the demon’ and Minotaur, was born in Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. His dad, Anibal, is from Uruguay and his mum, Esther, is from Spain. Anibal owned and managed a popular Italian restaurant in Sydney on George Street, where Esther worked as a waitress and the two fell in love. Alex has five siblings, three sisters and two brothers.
Alex De Minaur has dual citizenship of Australia and Spain. Until the age of five, he lived in Carss Park, a suburb in south Sydney. However, he them moved to Alicante in Spain. He was schooled in Spain before returning to Australia when he was 13 years old. He currently lives in Spain as of 2015, but he has always felt a strong connection with Australia, his birthplace. Alex often uses the Minotaur logo when signing the camera lens after winning matches.
Junior Career
Alex de Minaur initially took up the sport of tennis when he was just three years old, mainly playing at the Parkside Tennis Courts which is situated at Kogarah Bay within the exclusive and prestigious Sydney Private Tennis Academy.
Initially, he was coached by ex-professional players Kerry Dock and later by Cindy Dock. However, Adolfo Gutierrez has been his coach since Alex was a nine year old boy and was residing in Alicante, Spain.
On the juniors circuit, de Minaur achieved a career-high ranking of 2 and won the 2016 Australian Open boys’ doubles title with Blake Ellis. Lleyton Hewitt has never officially been his coach but he has been a mentor to him.
Pro Tennis Career
Alex de Minaur started playing professionally in July 2015 at the Spain F22, where he reached the quarterfinals. In 2016, he played most of the season on the ITF circuit in Spain and made it to two finals. He also qualified for his first ATP Challenger Tour final in Germany but lost to Steve Darcis in the final.
In 2017, de Minaur competed at the Brisbane International, where he beat the Russian Mikhail Kukushkin and the American Frances Tiafoe in qualifying rounds to earn the right to enter the ATP Tour main draw for the first time. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round to Mischa Zverev. He also received a wildcard into the Apia International Sydney, where he defeated Benoît Paire to claim his first Tour-level win.
After being awarded a wildcard, De Minaur played in his first Grand Slam event at the Australian Open in 2017. In the first round he defeated Gerald Melzer in five sets, despite facing match point in the fourth set. However, he lost to Sam Querrey in the second round. Later that year, he also participated in the French Open but fell at the first hurdle after losing to Robin Haase, in straight sets. He also lost at both Nottingham and Ilkley Challengers, in the first round, as well as the second qualifying round of Wimbledon.
De Minaur was given a wildcard for the 2017 US Open but lost in the first round to Dominic Thiem. Later that year, he won the Australian Open play-off for a main draw wildcard into the 2018 Australian Open. He finished the year with a singles ranking of No. 208.
Career Record
Since turning professional in 2015, de Minaur has won prize money in excess of US $11.5 million in singles tournaments. Overall, he has won 7 titles and enjoys a win percentage of around 60.5%, having won 208 of his 344 professional matches.
His highest ranking on the ATP tour is 10, which he currently holds as of January 2024. In Grand Slam events, his most notable achievement was to reach the quarter finals of the US Open in 2020. He has made the fourth round in the Australian Open four in each of the last three years, as well as at Wimbledon in 2022. At the French Open, he is yet to progress past the second round.
As a doubles player he has won one trophy, though his record is not great. So far he has only won 28 out of his 72 matches, which equates to a win ratio of 38.9%.

Alex is currently in a relationship with Katie Boutler, who is a British tennis player who comes from Leicestershire. They have been dating since 2020 and she is two years older than him.
Recently, rumours of their engagement spread like wildfire, after she was seen wearing a ring at the Australian Open in January 2024. However, these are yet to be confirmed.
As well as English, De Minaur speaks Spanish fluently. He also speaks a bit of French too.
