Cummins was born in Westmead in New South Wales and grew up in the Mount Riverview area of the Blue Mountains near Sydney. He has a couple of brothers and a couple of sisters. As a child he attended St Paul’s Grammar School. He also idolised the Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, who he would later become a teammate of at first class level for New South Wales and Australia.

When he was just three years old, Cummins lost the top part of the middle finger of his right hand (his dominant side) during an accident when his sister slammed a door on it accidentally.


Early Career

Growing up as a cricket loving child, Cummins represented the Glenbrook-Blaxland Cricket Club in junior cricket. He then started turning out for the Penrith District Cricket Club in first-grade cricket in 2010. Later that year, he made his debut for the New South Wales Under-17 and Under-19 teams.

He first made his name for New South Wales on a national level in 2010-11 when he took 4-16 against Tasmania in the preliminary final of the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash – a performance that saw him awarded man of the match. He finished the tournament as the joint leading wicket-taker.

Cummins made his first-class debut for New South Wales in March 2011 against Tasmania when he was just 17, taking figures of 2-80. He ended up playing the last three matches of that season in the Sheffield Shield competition, including in the final where he bowled 65 overs during the course of both innings.

Cummins was awarded a central contract by Cricket Australia in June 2011. Four months later he made his T20 and ODI debut for the national side against South Africa, taking ten wickets in five

matches. His performance caught the eye of the national selectors for the test team who picked him to play for Australia in the test match against South Africa at the Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg in 2011. Remarkably it was only the fourth first-class game he had played.
