Pat Cummins is an international cricketer who captains Australia in the Test match and One Day International formats and also represents them in T20s. He is one of the leading fast bowlers of the current era, especially when it comes to test cricket, where he held the number one ICC ranking in January 2023. He is also a handy lower order batsmen.
Since making his first class debut at the age of 17, Cummins has enjoyed a phenomenal career that has seen him accrue an estimated net worth of about AUS $40 million.
Early Life and Education
Cummins was born in Westmead in New South Wales and grew up in the Mount Riverview area of the Blue Mountains near Sydney. He has a couple of brothers and a couple of sisters. As a child he attended St Paul’s Grammar School. He also idolised the Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, who he would later become a teammate of at first class level for New South Wales and Australia.
When he was just three years old, Cummins lost the top part of the middle finger of his right hand (his dominant side) during an accident when his sister slammed a door on it accidentally.
Early Career
Growing up as a cricket loving child, Cummins represented the Glenbrook-Blaxland Cricket Club in junior cricket. He then started turning out for the Penrith District Cricket Club in first-grade cricket in 2010. Later that year, he made his debut for the New South Wales Under-17 and Under-19 teams.
He first made his name for New South Wales on a national level in 2010-11 when he took 4-16 against Tasmania in the preliminary final of the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash – a performance that saw him awarded man of the match. He finished the tournament as the joint leading wicket-taker.
Cummins made his first-class debut for New South Wales in March 2011 against Tasmania when he was just 17, taking figures of 2-80. He ended up playing the last three matches of that season in the Sheffield Shield competition, including in the final where he bowled 65 overs during the course of both innings.
Australia Debuts
Cummins was awarded a central contract by Cricket Australia in June 2011. Four months later he made his T20 and ODI debut for the national side against South Africa, taking ten wickets in five
matches. His performance caught the eye of the national selectors for the test team who picked him to play for Australia in the test match against South Africa at the Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg in 2011. Remarkably it was only the fourth first-class game he had played.
On making his debut, at 18 years and 193 days he became the youngest Aussie to play test cricket since 1953, beating Ian Craig. He took seven wickets overall, including 6/79 in the second innings, which made him the second only to Enamul Haque Jr. as the youngest test cricketer to capture six wickets in an innings. He also hit a boundary to win the match for the Aussie and was presented with the player of the match trophy.
Injuries
Despite his promising start, Cummins’ career was hampered by a series of injuries that kept him on the sidelines for significant periods, including the whole of the 2011-12 season.
These setbacks included stress fractures in his back and various other niggles, which led to a careful management of his workload to ensure his long-term fitness.
Test Cricket Return
In 2017, Cummins played his first Sheffield Shield game in six years, signifying an end to his run of injuries. He performed well for New South Wales and eventually earned a recall for the national side.
He took 23 wickets during the Ashes series of 2017–18 and 22 wickets in four matches against South Africa, where he also scored the first fifty of his test match career.
In 2019, after impressing with his calm persona and tactical reading of the game, Cummins was appointed one of two test vice-captains along with Travis Head.
He was officially made captain of the test match team in November 2021 after Tim Paine resigned, becoming the 47th skipper of the national side.
Career To Date
At the time of writing, Cummins has won 12 test matches as Australian captain, lost 5 and drawn 4. He has also won 12 ODI matches and lost just 3.
Impressively, he has taken 252 wickets at an average of 22.32. This has included 11 five wicket hauls and 2 ten wicket hauls. He has also scored 1138 runs at an average of 16.25.
Cummins has won the ODI 50-over World Cup twice, in 2015 and 2023 (the latter as captain). He also captained Australia to the ICC Test Championship in 2023 and has won the T20 World Cup in 2021.
Indian Premier League
As well as a successful international career, Cummins has enjoyed a lucrative and notable career in the IPL.
He has represented the Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils with distinction and was picked up
by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2024 season for $3.7 million – making him the second most expensive IPL player in history behind Mitchell Starc.
Personal Life
As part of its Elite Athlete Program, Cummins went to the University of Technology in Sydney. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business in 2017.
During August of 2022 he married his longtime partner, Becky Boston, with whom he has a son.
